Second Annual San Diego Fermentation Festival Celebrates Fermented Food, Beverages and Community!
Golden Coast Mead is excited to be apart of the second annual San Diego Fermentation Festival. Fermented foods such as mead, sauerkraut, kimchi, and kombucha tea are increasingly popular with foodies and traditional healers alike. An age old way to preserve and transform food, fermented products are nutritious, delicious, fun, safe and easy to make.
The daylong outdoor festival celebrates the culture of fermented foods and beverages by featuring over a dozen local artisanal businesses who make and sell items such as sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha, mead, coffee, chocolate, bread and beer.
The second annual San Diego Fermentation Festival will take place Sunday, January 31, 2015 from 10:00am to 5:00pm Coastal Roots Farm (450 Quail Gardens Drive, Encinitas, CA 92024). Tickets are $20 for general admission and $35 for a Beverage Garden ticket (21+ only). Children under 12 are admitted free with an accompanying adult.
The keynote speaker at the Festival will be Dr. Rob Knight, author, professor at University of California, San Diego, and cofounder of the American Gut Project (americangut.org). Dr. Knight’s passion is understanding the human microbiome, which he defines as “the genes of the collection of critters that make their home in and on us. Far from being inert passengers, these little organisms play essential roles in the most fundamental processes of our lives, including digestion, immune response, and even behavior.”
Mr. Durant adds that “One of the most numerous and important populations of these microbes is in our guts, and I believe eating fermented foods is one way to keep these critters (and us!) happy and healthy.”
The Festival will also feature:
● A Makers Marketplace showcasing the southern California bounty of artisanal food makers,
breweries, cideries, wineries, and kombucha makers
● The MasonTops DoItYourself Fermentation Stations where guests can learn handson how to make fermented food
● Workshops and demos given by fermentation experts covering how and why to make
and eat fermented foods and beverages
● Wholeness Pavilion, featuring short yoga classes, massage chair, and other healing modalities
● An Adult Beverage Garden featuring fermented beverages such as mead, kombucha beer and wine
● Live music and Entertainment
