OCEANSIDE -- The meadmakers at Golden Coast Mead released a new San Diego mead variety, Galley Grog, on Boxing Day, December 26, 2015. Beginning this week, the mead starts arriving in 500-ml bottles at most bottle shops in San Diego county, with limited quantity shipped to DC, Maryland, New York, and New Jersey. Bottles of Galley Grog is also available for purchase online via the Golden Coast Mead website.

Galley Grog is a limited edition aged mead using the Golden Coast Mead house wild yeast culture, dark rainforest wildflower honey, and San Diego spring water. Like many things in the Golden Coast meadery, Galley Grog emerged from a happy accident. The flavor profile tends towards the scotch spectrum, with toffee, coffee, chocolate, and wildflower honey notes, and has a slightly tart crisp finish. With slight petillance, Galley Grog is best enjoyed at cellar temp in a snifter.

“Unique, dry, traditional mead that is best for philosophizing in armchairs,” said Co-founder and Head Meadmaker Frank Golbeck. “Released on Boxing Day, because that’s when you philosophize in armchairs.” As to be expected from such a statement, the pairing notes are limited: Brandy snifter, neat.

Bottle must be consumed the day that it’s opened, due to oxidization risk.

ABOUT GOLDEN COAST MEAD AND SAN DIEGO STYLE MEAD

Golden Coast Mead was founded in 2010 by friends Frank Golbeck, Praveen Ramineni and Joe Colangelo and is located in Oceanside, CA. Their mission is to share delightfully surprising mead with the world. Golden Coast Mead is a craft alcoholic beverage company dedicated to making the best mead you've ever tasted, made from California honey and local spring water.

Frank Golbeck, the CEO, was first exposed to the magic of mead as a young kid on his grandfather’s apple orchard. He watched a room full of adults transform into a laughing, gregarious bunch, and he knew there was something special about this potion made from honey. Luckily, he made a career of it, and now shares his knowledge and passion for mead with the world.

Mead is actually the oldest alcoholic drink on the planet, and is just now beginning to make a strong comeback. Golden Coast Mead crafts a distinctive style of mead: San Diego Style Mead. It is brewed with top quality California honey, and Palomar Mountain spring water, making it a truly local product. Because it is naturally effervescent, it is served cold and has a light, refreshing, and balanced flavor profile. There is no pasteurization, force carbonation, added sulfites, or filtration; this mead is a modern interpretation of ancient practices. The result is a delicious, gluten-free beverage with over 200,000 pollinations in every glass.

As an invested member of the community, Golden Coast Mead donates at least one percent of its gross revenue to Dr. Nieh’s Entomology Lab at UCSD, researching the health and preservation of the honeybees, as part of One Percent for the Planet, an organization and movement that encourages corporate philanthropy for the preservation and restoration of the natural environment.
